As a 12yo kid in the 60's, Shankly was my first real life hero. When he talked with absolute passion about the fans, I used to think "he's talking about me" ! Such was his personality that he never forget who he was, where he came from and most of all, the importance of the fans.... this great man created the love of football in me and in many, many others I'm sure. Never forgotten, and Liverpool Football Club still to this day, means Shankly to me.

Shankley is quiet similar to present day Klopp. Motivating and creating worldclass players. And Edwards has filled up the shoes of Sawyers.

How happy Liverpool fans in the past : no haters, everyone praised them when they succeed. Look at now! Hates everwhere : "LiVARpool", when we did something great they say "still didn't win the EPL", when we on the top they want we go down. They're talking about Gerrard's slip, about his 0 PL. Imagine Liverpool fans in 70s and 80s was so joyful

Fantastic human being was Shanks, not only did he bring Liverpool fans together on the terraces whilst building a world class team, but he also brought the city together. If Shankly spoke you listened, and when you listened you believed. One of the best human beings in history.

I don't want to quibble, Jarvis, but the full version usually quoted is "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that." A bit long-winded, really, and a bit of editing certainly helps, I'd leave out the second sentence. Shanks was wrong, of course - ask the families of the 96 at Hillsborough or of the victims of Heysel, among many other cases - but even when he was wrong he was brilliant. What a character, what a creator!
