He's easily in the top 3 box to box midfielders of all time. He could do a bit of everything, he got stuck in and worked hard, and he performed moments of magic on a regular basis. Everyone wanted him Real Madrid, Chelsea and even Man Utd but Gerrard sacrificed his own success and wealth to stay loyal to LFC and that's why he's my favourite player of all time.

So many players at every level should find inspiration in Steven Gerrard, his shot technique above all. Fernando Torres is a brilliant player, but was never as good as in Liverpool, and he owes a lot of it to his Captain Fantastic. Happy 40th birthday Stevie G !!!

Stevie could've literally gone anywhere during his peak years(Chelsea, Madrid, Milan, Bayern, etc) and we wouldn't have begrudged him that wish to win even more big trophies, but he _didn't,_ and we love him even more because of that.

When Gerrard was playing you knew he could do any number of the following: crunching perfectly timed tackles; crucial interceptions; squaring up to anyone that fancied it; crunching slightly mistimed tackles; surging overpowering runs with the ball; 50/60 yard pinpoint passes; 1-2s on the edge of the box; surging overpowering runs without the ball; through balls; crosses; dinky little finishes; and of course smashing one in from 25 yards. I can't think of anyone else that could do all that. He played the way youngsters imagine themselves doing when they're kicking a ball round in their backyards. The hero, the leader, the inspiration. So you can keep your Ronaldos and your Messis. Lampard and Scholes? No thanks. I'll take Gerrard.

Facts. Lampard played his whole career off the shoulder of the striker & hardly had to do any midfield work. It’s little wonder so many Chelsea strikers bar Drogba struggled there cuz he always occupied their space. Scholes was a great anchor & midfield dictator, but he didn’t have Gerrard’s athleticism and could be easily left for dead when taken on. Gerrard in his pomp wouldn’t let anyone past him. He was way more complete than those two.

Scholes was more gifted on the ball if you wanted to play Tiki Taka etc. A possession based team would have him looking formidable and he saw 20 goals a season in his younger years too. Gerard had that X factor yes but Scholes longevity and different phases of play speak to deeper quality. Not much in it tho. Any team would be happy to have em.

Those long shots made me fall in love with football, Steven Gerrard and Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard was ranked as second in who shooked the Kop after king Kenny ,one of the greatest midfielder ever . one of the best long range shooters and one of the best leadership quality player ever . Respect YNWA.

@@beta802 we aren't like, saying Trent=Gerrard. In his age, Trent has the same impact as Gerrard at his age. Also, not many fullbacks can pass or shoot well. His defense record too is good for someone of his age. He's not at the defensive level of AWB but Trent brings more to the team than AWB. Header is not something that should be a fullback's speciality. So, I think you're mistaken from the start

I have to say as a Chelsea fan I love Lamps and his goalscoring record is just plain ridiculous. However, Steven Gerrard has to be one of the most complete footballers I have ever seen. Just a phenomenal player, the complete package and I have so much respect from him. A true english footballing legend.

Tbh ive still not got over him not being there anymore, imagine him playing in a team with salah diaz and mane last year, getting to the finals with thid guy would have eased some nerves, best player ive ever seen by a mile

oh how badly i miss him. best ever pl midfielder for me and made me fall in love with the game. after a long reign of JK, we want him back in the dugout. anfield and stevie are a match that was made in heaven.

The level of finishing, especially during his early years, is out of this world. Never been a midfielder quite like him before or since.....and he absolutely, 100%, without any question, was superior to Scholes and Lampard.

When I was a kid, Steven Gerrard was the reason I got into Football and the reason I started supporting Liverpool. Spent so much time trying to replicate his long range thunderbolt shots and perfectly arrowed passes, couldn't of cared less about the rest of my game/skills lol!. Fucking amazing to see us finally lift the Premier League trophy, just wish that we'd won it whilst he was playing, he really deserved it.

Immortal. Top 3 of world midfielders in his time which spanned many years. Even the great Zidane rated him. Watching this montage shows how superb he played. Who else scores thunder ball goals like him. Unique in his gift. A proper workhorse where the words “never die” meant something to him, all the way to the final whistle. Maybe the world would rate him as THE best, had Liverpool won more, but it takes a team to consistently win. Can’t take away the individual brilliance.

People make fun of him for slipping over in that one match but all jokes aside he was a brilliant player

I can't imagine prime Stevie in our current squad, under Klopp we'd be unstoppable

Some of these goals I haven't seen before and that's coming from a long time fan. The man is an all time legend

IMO gerrard’s first touch, passing , vision , technique and many aspects were underrated. Especially his passing and vision. He was as good as playmaker like Kevin de bryune but gerrard passing and vision weren’t talked that much . He could cross the ball, long pass short pass with great accuracy. If he was Brazilian, Spanish or Italian he would be rated more than that. He can do almost everything. Defending, attacking and creating. Maybe because he could do everything so perfect the media or analysts couldn’t keep tracking everything maybe .He would have scored like lampard if he played more attacking like lampard. The difference was lampard can do his business in attacking because there were quality midfielders covering for him when he went full attack . But gerrard needed to cover for his teammates a lot because less quality . Look at 2008/09 season when he got mascherano and Alonso covering for him, he scored 20+ that season because the quality of midfield we had that season. In gerrard career with Liverpool he surrounded by average players due to our lack of fund and unambitious owners. You can count how many players that actually in similar to gerrard quality that played consistently with him. Either they went to other club or always injured. Gerrard basically carried us all his career with us. Don’t give me lampard , scholes were better than him when you surrounded by world class players all the time. Even yaya toure was a monster when his manager give him free role to attack because he had quality covering for him. Put gerrard in our current team and play him behind firmino, salah , mane in and have vvd, Gomez, Allison, Fabinho , Trent , hendo Robertson behind him and we see who blink first. He would go berserk every match and no team can contain him. Gerrard never had chance to play with these quality but all the midfielders that claimed to be better than him had the chance.

He is my absolute idol, I’m so grateful I was born in time to watch him play. I even was lucky enough to get a game worn autographed captains armband with certificate of authenticity
